"Can the whole house be done before the wedding?" It is one of the most common questions a design studio hears between October and February, and it usually arrives with eight weeks or less to go. The honest answer depends less on budget than on the calendar. A repaint, new curtains, better lighting and a deep clean fit comfortably into eight weeks. A new modular kitchen, a wardrobe wall or a false ceiling usually does not, once design, factory production and installation are counted — and half-finished carpentry in a house full of guests is far worse than an old wardrobe.
This checklist is arranged by stage, counting back from the first function held at home. Print it, tick it, and hand the relevant section to whoever is managing each job. It assumes a typical Indian flat or bungalow that will host relatives for several days, a few small functions at home, and photographs in the living room, the entrance and the couple's bedroom. The couple's room itself is covered in a separate article on bedroom ideas for newlyweds.
How much fits in the time you have
Before ticking anything, match the scope to the weeks left. The table is based on the timelines used across this site: about 7–10 working days for a 2BHK repaint with putty, and about 12–16 weeks after design approval for mid-range 2BHK interiors. Painters and carpenters are heavily booked before Diwali and through the wedding season, so add a margin for booking.
| Weeks before the first home function | Realistic scope | Leave for after the wedding |
|---|---|---|
| 20 weeks or more | Full interiors for a room or two: wardrobe, bed, false ceiling, lighting, paint | Rarely anything, if decisions are made quickly |
| 12–16 weeks | Repaint, one or two loose-furniture upgrades, curtains, lighting changes, bathroom fittings, polishing | New modular kitchen, full-height wardrobes, false ceilings across the home |
| 6–10 weeks | Repaint of main rooms, curtains, lamps and a few light fittings, deep clean, polish, pest control | Any factory-made carpentry; anything needing civil work |
| 3–5 weeks | Touch-up painting, cleaning, polishing, new bedding and cushions, temporary décor, safety check | Full repainting of the whole home |
| Under 3 weeks | Cleaning, decluttering, borrowed or rented furniture, décor and lighting by the decorator | Everything else — protect the house and plan the work for later |
Stage 1 — 16 to 12 weeks out: decide and book
- Get two or three written quotes for painting, stating paint tier, coats, putty and whether rates include GST
- Book the painter, electrician and plumber with dates in writing; the season fills up early
- Order anything with a long lead time now: made-to-measure curtains, a sofa, a mattress, a new bed
- Confirm with the event decorator what they will supply, so the home team does not buy the same lights twice
Stage 2 — 12 to 6 weeks out: repair, then paint
Everything wet or dusty happens in this stage. Repairs come before paint, because a damp patch painted over in November reappears as a stain in the wedding photographs. In Surat and much of western India, the post-monsoon months are good for painting, but walls that soaked up rain may still carry moisture; a painter who checks walls before applying putty is worth more than a cheaper one who does not.
Stage 3 — 6 to 3 weeks out: fabrics, light and guest rooms
With the dust gone, the house can be dressed. Lighting does more for photographs than any other single change: warm 2700–3000 K light in the living room and bedrooms, and enough light at the entrance and staircase for elderly guests arriving after dark. Guest rooms and the storage plan are where most families run out of time, so they need their own checklist.

Stage 4 — the last three weeks: clean, polish, check
- Deep clean the whole home, including fans, light fittings, window tracks, lofts and kitchen chimney filters
- Diamond-polish marble floors only if they are dull; allow a few days of drying and do not polish in the final week
- Book pest control at least ten days before guests arrive, so the house can be aired
- Have the electrician test the RCCB, check the distribution board, and confirm the extra load for décor lights and heaters
- Fix fairy lights and décor with removable hooks; do not hang anything heavy from a gypsum false ceiling
- Check balcony and terrace railings and stair handrails for wobble before crowds lean on them
- Clear the main circulation path from the door to the living room, kitchen and bathrooms for elderly guests
| Item (indicative October 2026) | Typical rate or range | Example for a 1,000 sq ft 2BHK |
|---|---|---|
| Repaint, economy emulsion, putty + primer + 2 coats | ₹12–18 per sq ft paintable | ≈ ₹36,000–54,000 (≈ 3,000 sq ft paintable) |
| Repaint, mid-range (premium walls, texture wall, enamel) | ₹20–30 walls; ₹40–150+ texture | ≈ ₹62,000–1,08,000 |
| Feature wall in wallpaper | ₹60–250 per sq ft installed | 100 sq ft: ≈ ₹6,000–25,000 |
| Curtains, economy to mid-range, lined with track | ₹6,000–10,000 / ₹10,000–20,000 per window | 4 windows: ≈ ₹24,000–80,000 |
| Deep cleaning | ₹4,000–10,000 per home | ≈ ₹4,000–10,000 |
| General pest control | ₹1,500–4,000 per home | ≈ ₹1,500–4,000 |
| Marble diamond polishing | ₹25–60 per sq ft | 300 sq ft living-dining: ≈ ₹7,500–18,000 |
| Sofa cum bed for guests | ₹25,000–80,000 each | One unit: ≈ ₹25,000–80,000 |
The quick-answer figure of about ₹65,000–2 lakh is simply four lines of this table added together: a repaint (₹36,000 economy to ₹1,08,000 mid-range), curtains for four windows (₹24,000–80,000), a deep clean (₹4,000–10,000) and pest control (₹1,500–4,000), which gives ≈ ₹65,500–2,02,000. Lamps, a guest sofa cum bed, polishing or a premium repaint are added on top.
Stage 5 — the wedding week, and the week after
Frequently asked questions
How early should we start preparing the home for a wedding?
For a refresh — painting, repairs, curtains, lighting and cleaning — 12–16 weeks before the first home function is comfortable, and eight weeks is the practical minimum. New carpentry or a kitchen needs about 14–20 weeks including design, or should be planned for after the wedding.
Is it worth repainting the whole house before a wedding?
Usually only the most-seen rooms need it: the entrance, living, dining, the couple's room and the guest bathroom. Back rooms and ceilings in good condition can wait. A 2BHK repaint with putty takes about 7–10 working days, so leave time for drying and cleaning afterwards.
How can we make the house look good for photographs on a small budget?
Fix and clean before buying anything new. Then spend on warm, even lighting, fresh curtains and cushion covers, one feature wall and a clear, uncluttered living room. These show in photographs far more than new furniture does.
