Heights & Depths

Breakfast Counter Height and Depth

Most Indian breakfast counters are 900 mm high (counter stools) or 1050–1100 mm (bar stools), but depth is what decides comfort: about 300–450 mm for a wall ledge, 850–900 mm for a peninsula with cabinets and knee overhang, 750–900 mm for two-sided seating, and 900–1200 mm for an island. Each person needs about 600 mm of length and a 300–400 mm deep place setting.

Bedroom Ceiling Design Ideas

A bedroom ceiling is seen lying down, so it should be calm, glare-free and lit indirectly: a single perimeter cove or a floating panel over the bed, warm 2700–3000 K light, the fan centred over the bed with blades about 2400 mm above the floor, and at least 2600 mm clear height. Plain gypsum costs about ₹60–80 per sq ft and designer cove ceilings ₹80–180 (indicative October 2026).

Wall Panelling Cost Per Sq Ft — cover
Cost Guides

Wall Panelling Cost Per Sq Ft

Installed wall panelling in India costs from about ₹50–90 per sq ft for plain PVC strips, ₹110–500 for charcoal, UV marble and WPC louvres, ₹250–850 for laminate and fluted laminate work, and ₹700–1,800 for veneer, fluted stone and PU-painted fluted MDF (indicative October 2026). The material is only part of the bill — battens, trims, lighting, cut-outs, wastage and GST decide the final number.

Sun Path and Orientation for Indian Homes — cover

Sun Path and Orientation for Indian Homes

Across India the sun rises roughly 24–29° north of east in June and the same south of east in December, stands high in the south at noon for most of the year, and — south of the Tropic of Cancer, as in Surat at about 21° N — even swings slightly to the north in early summer. Long facades facing north and south, short ones facing east and west, south overhangs of about window height × tan(latitude) and vertical shading on the west are the core of a cool Indian home.

History of the Indian Kitchen: From Chulha to Modular

The Indian kitchen moved from a clay chulha on a purified floor, where the cook sat beside a fire only about 200–300 mm high, to a stone platform at about 850–900 mm, and then to the modular kitchen with wall units, chimneys and hobs. The fuel changed from wood and dung to kerosene, LPG and now piped gas and induction — but the best ideas of the old kitchen, ventilation, daylight and storage for bulk and spices, still matter.

Fire Safety in Homes and Offices — cover
Lighting

Fire Safety in Homes and Offices

Most home and office fires in India begin with electrical faults, cooking and gas, or a small flame near something combustible — and smoke, not flame, is what usually traps people. Sound wiring with MCBs and 30 mA RCCBs, smoke alarms outside bedrooms and in offices, a 2–4 kg ABC extinguisher near the kitchen exit, clear escape routes and a licensed fire consultant for commercial and taller buildings cover the essentials.

Car Showroom Design Guide — cover
Commercial & Hospitality

Car Showroom Design Guide

A good car showroom gives each displayed car about 25–35 m² including walk-around space, a glazed frontage with a car entry of about 3.0–3.6 m clear width, a clear height of 4.5 m or more, linear diffused lighting that draws clean reflections on paint, and a delivery bay and lounge planned as carefully as the display floor. Indicative interior fit-out runs about ₹1,400–2,200 per sq ft for a standard dealership and ₹2,200–3,500+ for a premium one (October 2026), excluding civil work, AC and signage.

Kitchen Island Dimensions and Clearances

A working kitchen island is 900 mm high, 900–1000 mm deep with seating (1000–1200 mm with a sink or hob), and 1500–2400 mm long, with 1200 mm clear on every working side, 1500 mm where two people cook back to back and 900–1000 mm behind stools. That means a room at least about 3600–3900 mm wide for a wall run plus an island, and about 4500 mm with counters on both sides.

Flexible Furniture and Transforming Spaces — cover
Future of Design

Flexible Furniture and Transforming Spaces

Flexible furniture lets one room do two or three jobs — a study that sleeps guests, a living room that seats twelve, a bedroom that opens into a lounge. It only works when the open position is planned as carefully as the closed one: a queen wall bed needs about 2100–2200 mm of clear floor in front of its wall, and every moving part needs hardware rated for daily use.

Epoxy Flooring for Homes and Offices — cover
Materials & Finishes

Epoxy Flooring for Homes and Offices

Epoxy flooring is a seamless resin layer poured or rolled over a sound, dry concrete or screed base — about 0.3–0.5 mm as a coating, 2–3 mm as a self-levelling floor and 4–6 mm as a heavy-duty mortar. It suits garages, utility areas, studios, offices and showrooms, costs indicatively ₹40–90 per sq ft as a coating and ₹150–450 for self-levelling and decorative systems in October 2026, and succeeds or fails on surface preparation.

Burj Khalifa: Design Lessons From the World's Tallest Tower

Burj Khalifa reaches about 828 m not because of one trick but because its shape, structure and services were designed as one system: a Y-shaped plan around a buttressed concrete core, setbacks that break up the wind, and a facade built for desert heat. The same logic — plan for wind, structure, sun and services together — applies to every Indian tower and even to a bungalow.

Room Ideas

Bed Back Wall Design Ideas (Headboard Walls)

A good bed back wall is sized to the bed, not the wall: a headboard zone about 2400–3000 mm wide for a queen or king bed with side tables, with its top at 1000–1200 mm for a padded headboard or carried to the ceiling for a full-height panel. Indicative October 2026 costs run from ₹20–30 per sq ft for paint to ₹600–1,800 for upholstered, veneer or PU fluted panels.
