The Great Stupa at Sanchi was begun under Emperor Ashoka in the 3rd century BCE, enlarged and cased in stone in the following century, and given its four carved gateways (toranas) in the 1st century BCE, making it among the oldest surviving stone structures in India. Inscribed by UNESCO in 1989, it still teaches lessons in threshold, procession, proportion and storytelling in stone.
A contemporary ethnic interior works when jaali, brass and wood each have one clear job: wood as the warm base, a jaali as the filter between spaces, and brass as thin lines and a few heirloom objects. Keep about 60 per cent calm background, 30 per cent wood and 10 per cent brass and pattern, and detail each material properly — that is the difference between Indian character and a themed showroom.
A practical home bar unit in India is 1200–1800 mm wide and 450–550 mm deep, with a 900 mm counter (or 1050–1100 mm for bar stools), closed storage below, a lit mirror or glass section above and lockable bottle storage. A complete unit in veneer, PU or acrylic with mirror, toughened glass, lighting and a stone top typically costs about ₹1.2–4 lakh before appliances (indicative October 2026).
In 2018 UNESCO inscribed the Victorian Gothic and Art Deco Ensembles of Mumbai, recognising the rare face-off across the Oval Maidan between nineteenth-century Gothic public buildings and the 1930s–40s Art Deco apartments, cinemas and the sea-facing row on Marine Drive. The Deco half matters because it shows a city adapting a global modern style to its own climate, materials and way of life.
Traditional Vastu places underground water — the sump, well or borewell — in the north-east, north or east, and the heavy overhead tank in the south-west, west or south, keeping both away from the centre and the south-east. Practically, what matters just as much is keeping the borewell or sump well away from the septic tank (15 m or more is a common aim), carrying the overhead tank on walls or columns designed for its weight, and sizing storage at about 135 litres per person per day.
A Surat textile office works when three things are designed together: a gaddi or table display zone of about 3000 × 2400 mm where buyers sit and fabrics are opened, wall racks 300–600 mm deep sized to the actual saree packet or roll, and high-CRI lighting of about 4000 K so colours read true. Indicative fit-out runs about ₹900–3,500 per sq ft in October 2026, depending on finish level.
Plan switchboards on the furniture plan: a board on the latch side of every door at 1100–1200 mm, bedside boards at 700–900 mm, sockets at 300–450 mm and kitchen boards at 1000–1100 mm, with switches in the same order in every room and a neutral wire run to every switch box so smart switches can be added later. A typical 3BHK needs roughly 45–70 plates; basic modular ranges for the whole home cost about ₹20,000–40,000 and premium ranges ₹90,000–2.5 lakh (indicative October 2026).
A small house front works when it has one clear idea — usually a single frame or box around the upper floor, a vertical staircase strip, and a solid base — with openings lined up on common sill and lintel lines and real shading of 450–900 mm over the glass. For a 20 ft wide G+1 front of about 500 sq ft, paint alone costs roughly ₹6,000–9,000 and a modern treatment with brick tiles and an aluminium screen about ₹40,000–90,000 (indicative October 2026).
3D renders show what a room will look like; 2D drawings say exactly how to build it, with every dimension in mm, and a home interior needs both. For a typical 3BHK, expect a written drawing list covering the measured plan, furniture layout, ceiling, electrical and lighting, plumbing, flooring, wall elevations and joinery details, plus roughly 12–25 render views at about ₹2,000–10,000 per view (indicative October 2026).
In Indian homes the door and window head line sits at about 2100 mm above the finished floor, and the lintel soffit just above it — about 2160–2175 mm for a 2100 mm shutter in a 100 × 60 mm frame. A 900 mm shutter needs a frame about 1000 mm wide and a masonry opening of about 1000–1020 mm, with a lintel typically 150 mm deep bearing at least 150 mm into the wall on each side.
The Jantar Mantar observatories, built by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II in the early eighteenth century, are buildings that work as scientific instruments: their walls, ramps and bowls are aligned to the meridian and the Earth's axis so that shadows measure time and the position of the sun and stars. The Jaipur observatory, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2010, still teaches designers how to read the sun — the same geometry that sizes a chhajja over a window today.
In 2026, complete home interiors in Hyderabad typically cost about ₹850–1,250 per sq ft of carpet area for basic work, ₹1,250–2,100 for mid-range and ₹2,100–3,600+ for premium, with most families landing at ₹1,400–1,800. A typical 1,350 sq ft 3BHK therefore costs about ₹17–25 lakh at mid-range and a 950 sq ft 2BHK about ₹12–20 lakh, before loose furniture, appliances, GST and design fees.
